Marching Across Titans: Exploring the Epic Scale of Legions Imperialis

At Barnsley Wargames Club, we’ve recently been enjoying the grandeur and spectacle of Legions Imperialis, Games Workshop’s new take on epic-scale warfare in the grim darkness of the far future. It’s been great seeing the tiny tanks roll out and the titans stride across our tabletops as we recreate battles on a much grander scale than most 28mm games allow. With the narrative terrain we have at the club, it feels like we’re fighting entire campaigns—not just skirmishes—and that’s brought a whole new level of fun and immersion to our sessions.

Legions Imperialis is a 6mm-scale game that lets players command massive armies of Space Marines, Solar Auxilia, Titans, and more. Battles unfold with hundreds of models in tight formation, capturing the feeling of true galactic warfare. Unlike skirmish-level games, Legions focuses on combined arms tactics—managing infantry, armour, artillery, and towering war engines in concert. Each phase of the game offers meaningful decisions and rewards strategic thinking. It’s quick to pick up but has real tactical depth, especially as you master unit synergy and deployment strategies.

This isn’t Games Workshop’s first venture into epic-scale gaming. Legions Imperialis is seen by many as the spiritual successor to the classic Epic 40,000 and Epic Armageddon systems, which were hugely popular throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Those games had a loyal following and were known for showcasing massive battles that couldn’t be achieved at 28mm scale. After a long hiatus, GW’s return to epic gaming has been met with great enthusiasm, especially with the game tying closely into the Horus Heresy setting—giving players a rich, lore-heavy backdrop for their clashes.

If you’ve ever fancied fielding an entire legion of Space Marines or watching a Warhound Titan stride through a ruined city, Legions Imperialis is the game for you. And if you're already a fan, why not come down and play a few games? We've got space, scenery, and plenty of like-minded gamers ready to roll dice. Whether you're curious about the system or already deep in the Legions trenches, get in touch about joining Barnsley Wargames Club and book a game soon!
