Lately at the club, we've been diving into Chain of Command for our World War II fix. The fog of war, the tension of command decisions, and the tactical flexibility have made for some incredible evenings of gameplay. Whether you're holding a crumbling French village or launching a surprise ambush in a hedgerow, every game feels immersive.
Chain of Command, by TooFatLardies, is a platoon-level WWII skirmish game that focuses on realism and command friction. Players take control of a platoon and support elements, with orders issued via command dice that influence leaders' actions. Cover, morale, line of sight and realistic deployment make it a deeply tactical experience.
Released in 2013, Chain of Command has grown in popularity among historical gamers, partly thanks to its unique pre-game Patrol Phase, which sets up the game’s narrative before the first dice are rolled. It's part of the broader Lardy philosophy of “playing the period, not the rules,” and it’s seen several supplements and fan-driven expansions since.
